Former DMK Minister Mr Veerapandi S Arumugam today died at a private hospital in Chennai. He was suffering from respiratory problems. Mr Arumugham was the Agriculture Minister during the earlier DMK regime in Tamil Nadu.

Two DMK functionaries have been arrested for trying to set themselves ablaze protesting detention of former Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam under the Goondas Act, as eight government buses were stoned in Salem, police said.

Two former DMK ministers Veerapandi S Arumugam and I Periyasamy were arrested on Monday on different charges. Mr Arumugam, the DMK's strongman in Salem district, was arrested near his residence on land grabbing charges and Mr Periyasamy at Koombur in Dindigul district for alleged illegal granite mining, police said.

Vigilance officials today conducted raids in the premises of former DMK minister N K K P Raja across Tamil Nadu in connection with a disproportionate assets case. The raids by officials of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption were in progress in Chennai and Erode districts, DVAC sources said.
