Former DMK Minister Mr Veerapandi S Arumugam today died at a private hospital in Chennai. He was suffering from respiratory problems. Mr Arumugham was the Agriculture Minister during the earlier DMK regime in Tamil Nadu.

A meeting of the senior most leaders of the DMK comprising the party's General Council - the highest decision-making body - saw the usual tension over the issue of who will replace M Karunanidhi as party president when he retires. Mr Karunanidhi's sons, MK Stalin and MK Alagiri, both want the job.
