The newspaper said the Tiguan, Sharan and CC models built in 2015 as well as Porsche 911, Boxter, Cayman und Panamera models from 2015 and 2016. It cited Germany's KBA federal motor authority as saying the cars needed an update to the software of the airbag control units.

NGT noted that VW has recalled only 64 per cent of the affected cars as undertaken by it and 36 per cent of the polluting vehicles are still on the roads.

The National Green Tribunal has directed German auto major Volkswagen, which is embroiled in a global emission scandal, to explain reasons for not recalling 3.23 lakh cars and warned of penal action.

A spokesman told that some 191,000 Seat Ibiza and Arona vehicles with similar seat belt locks were also affected.

Around 60,000 cars have been recalled for a software update, taking the total number of vehicles with Audi engines to more than 900,000.

The tainted cars were recalled by VW, but the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) said tests it commissioned on local vehicles before and after being updated showed they were still exceeding regulations in real-world settings.

Engines of the vehicles to be recalled were equipped with drain valves that do not allow water to drain properly, and thus lead to possible safety problems.

Road Transport authority KBA had told Audi to respond by February 2 on how it plans to update vehicle software controlling emissions, making sure the cars are unable to illegally manipulate emission controls.

The investigation covers eight models from the 2010-2014 time-frames, including the Jetta, Tiguan, Golf and Passat.
