Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday said that 200-220 more airports, heliports and water aerodromes will be built in the country over the next five years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Kevadia-Sabarmati water aerodromes and seaplane service, connecting two key projects in Gujarat. The event was part of the 145th birth anniversary celebrations of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister of India, observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has approved a proposal for setting up of water aerodromes in the country, with Chilika Lake in Odisha, Sardar Sarovar Dam and Sabarmati River Front in Gujarat being identified in the first phase for development of such facilities, an official said today.

The government is planning to build water aerodromes for operating seaplanes after some firms expressed interest to operate them, a senior civil aviation ministry official said today. A water aerodrome is any water body that complies with certain minimum requirements for landing an aircraft, the official said
