A powerful earthquake struck the north-east before dawn today, killing at least eleven people and injuring nearly 200, though the toll was expected to rise, with rescue efforts hampered by severed power supplies and telecommunication links.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today handed over relief materials for Nepal earthquake victims at the Indo-Nepal border in Darjeeling district.

As the number of deaths in Saturday's earthquake climb to 72 in India, India's relief efforts in Nepal, where over 4,000 people have died, have been stepped up. But though medical teams and relief material is flowing into Kathmandu, aircraft are encountering difficulty landing into the congested Tribhuban airport.

The toll in Bihar rose to 45 this morning from Saturday's devastating earthquake, which had its epicenter in Nepal and affected the eastern part of India. So far, 58 people have died and 237 have been injured in the three states bordering Nepal -- Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

A massive earthquake in Nepal, felt in most parts of India, today killed three people and injured over 30 in West Bengal, as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee telephoned Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apprise him about the situation.

An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale hit West Bengal and other parts of eastern India early on Wednesday, the meteorological department said. There have been no reports of loss of life or property so far. Parts of Bihar also experienced the quake.

Many people were injured, power supply was disrupted in parts of northern West Bengal and houses developed cracks as a powerful quake, epicentred in adjoining Sikkim, rocked the region on Sunday evening.
