Commuters in Mumbai faced significant disruptions on Monday as local train services on the Western Railway network were severely impacted by technical issues because of cable cuts at Borivali station.

The Western Railway's suburban network is spread between Churchgate and Dahanu stations and is used by more than 30 lakh commuters every day.

The Western Railway (WR) on Wednesday launched a mobile application that will allow commuters to check the live status of trains on its suburban network spread between Churchgate station in south Mumbai and Dahanu in adjoining Palghar district. According to the zonal railway, the app, Yatra, also has several other features.

Western Railway will run four ladies special suburban trains from Wednesday, taking the count of such "women's only" services to six and overall daily services on its network to 704 amid the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

The Railways will build nearly 4,000-km dedicated freight corridor connecting industrial areas in the eastern and western parts of the country to southern India through major ports in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, a document on the planned corridors says.

Seventeen persons were killed Thursday in separate mishaps on the suburban network of Western and Central Railways, the railway police said.

The South Western Railways has prepared a pre-feasibility report for the long-pending Bengaluru suburban railway, which envisages an investment of Rs. 12,000 crore for the 168-kilometer network, nearly half of which will be elevated, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said.
