Why Is Republic Day Important

On Republic Day, flag-hoisting ceremonies and parades by armed forces and school children are held in different parts of the country. The grandest and most important of these parades is held at Rajpath, now known as Kartavya Path, in Delhi.

While India celebrated its freedom from British colonisation on August 15, 1947, it established itself as a sovereign state on January 26, 1950. In other words, this is the day the Indian constitution came into being 67 years ago.
