Wifi At Railway Stations

The public wi-fi network across around 19 railway stations managed by the UK's Network Rail have been hacked and remain inaccessible on Thursday as British Transport Police (BTP) investigate the cyber-attack.

The high-speed free WiFi internet facility is now available at 6,100 railway stations across the country, RailTel said on Tuesday.

To offer an enhanced travel experience to railway passengers, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) on Thursday opened a new world-class executive lounge at New Delhi Railway Station.

Over two crore users logged into the railway WiFi at 1,606 stations across its network in May and the facility of free internet would be extended to the remaining 4,791 stations within this year, Indian Railways' digital arm RailTel said Tuesday.

Now the cleanliness and security at the railway hospitals will also be monitored through CCTV cameras.

The national transporter has currently commissioned Wi-Fi services at 216 major stations.

Google is using the learning from the RailWire project to bring similar Internet access to more public places in India.

Aiming to provide connectivity in remote areas, Railways will set up Wi-Fi hotspot kiosks at about 500 stations and help people access an array of online services, including various government schemes.

With Kollam in south India becoming Wi-Fi-enabled, railways have completed the task of equipping 100 stations with free Wi-Fi service across the country by the end of 2016.

Authorities at Bihar's Patna Railway Station have blocked access to porn sites in its free Wi-Fi service at the station, officials said on Wednesday.

Free WiFi, introduced last month at the Patna train station, has no shortage of takers. Of the 23 railway stations that provide free WiFi, Patna tops the list for the maximum number of searches. The curiosity is largely in porn.
