A policeman allegedly shot himself dead using his service rifle at the iconic Writers' Building on Friday afternoon, officials said.

The over 200-year-old Writers' Building of Kolkata -- once the secretariat of the Bengal government and now undergoing renovation -- was evacuated this afternoon after a warning about a bomb attack reached the Kolkata police.

A court in Kolkata on Friday granted bail to pest controller Jyotirmoy Nandi, who was arrested for "attempting to burn down" the iconic Writers' Buildings which houses the West Bengal secretariat.
