Yakub Abdul Razak Memon was hanged today in a jail in Maharashtra's Nagpur, for his role in the 1993 blasts in Mumbai in which 257 people were killed. The Supreme Court rejected his last-minute petition against execution at 5 am this morning, after a historic middle-of-the-night hearing.

As the Supreme Court's verdict ended Yakub Memon's final attempt to stop his hanging, his lawyer said: "I have exhausted all legal remedies, I hope he has a dignified death, if that is his fate."

Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon, whose last-ditch effort to escape the noose at the Central Prison here on his 53rd birthday tomorrow was rejected by the Supreme Court, has not prepared any will so far, the convict's lawyer Anil Gedam said here today.
