Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition party said today it was set to claim over 70 percent of seats following Myanmar's election, a tally that could sweep it to power after decades of military dominance.

Myanmar officials today announced November 8 as the date for a historic general election set to be the first contested by Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition in a quarter of a century.

Aung San Suu Kyi said today that her opposition party would shortly decide whether to contest crucial elections in Myanmar later this year as it battles to change the constitution barring her from the presidency.

Residents of Myanmar's commercial hub Yangon went to the polls today for the first municipal elections in six decades, with voters hoping for change as the city booms, despite knowing little about the candidates or their policies.
