Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's takedown of his critics for the government's handling of the economy has drawn a jibe from the Congress that not just accused the minister of shifting goalposts but also attacked the minister for comments about BJP veteran Yashwant Sinha that the Congress said "should be unacceptable in political life".

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, in his caustic comeback to BJP veteran Yashwant Sinha's criticism of the state of the economy, described the former finance minister as "a job applicant at 80". Mr Jaitley said that he did not "have the luxury as yet of being a former finance minister" or a "former finance minister who has turned a columnist".

In his ferocious attack on the government and the economy, Yashwant Sinha was only following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's orders, claimed BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha on Thursday.

The Shiv Sena challenged its ally BJP to "prove Yashwant Sinha wrong" for his stinging comments on the state of the Indian economy on Wednesday which has erupted into a major political storm, in Mumbai today.
