In recognition of his “generous benefaction”, the University of Cambridge announced on Tuesday that its chemistry department will be named after Indian pharmaceutical major Cipla's non-executive chairman Yusuf Hamied until 2050.

An eminent Indian scientist has been named by UN Chief Ban Ki-moon to a high-level panel on health technology, innovation, and access, in an effort to escalate investments in research and development for diseases where financial returns are not guaranteed.

Cipla has also received US drug regulator's nod under "President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief" for a paediatric HIV drug, which is likely to support its revenue growth in FY16, the company said.

The main promoter Yusuf Hamied had sought an 'informal guidance' from Sebi on whether the proposed voting agreement among his family members would trigger an open offer.

In a possible succession planning exercise, pharmaceuticals giant Cipla's promoter family has proposed to vote together as a single unit under overall direction of patriarch Yusuf Hamied in his lifetime, and under his brother Mustafa Hamied thereafter.

Drug major Cipla's subsidiary - Cipla Medpro - has bagged an order worth 2 billion rands (around Rs 1,100 crore) for HIV drugs from the South African government.

Amid American firms' allegations of patent norm violations against Indian pharmaceutical companies, domestic drug maker Cipla has said that "essential" medicines should be made available to people at affordable rates and not be sold under "monopoly".
