The first known case of a woman spreading the Zika virus to a man during unprotected sex was reported today in New York City, health authorities said.

The US government on Friday urged men who recently travelled to areas where Zika virus runs rife and their pregnant sex partners to abstain from sexual activity or consistently and correctly use condoms during sex for the duration of the pregnancy.

The first known case of Zika virus transmission in the United States was reported in Texas on Tuesday by local health officials, who said it likely was contracted through sex and not a mosquito bite, a day after the World Health Organization declared an international public health emergency.
