The government has announced plans to develop the country's top 50 tourist destinations in collaboration with state governments, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said while presenting the Union Budget for 2025-26 on Saturday. The initiative aims to enhance India's tourism sector by improving infrastructure, accessibility, and facilities at key locations across the country. Additionally, to support small-scale tourism businesses, the government will extend Mudra loans to homestays, making it easier for individuals to offer lodging services to domestic and international travellers.
In a push for medical tourism, Sitharaman highlighted that the private sector would play a crucial role in its promotion. India has emerged as a major destination for medical treatments due to its affordable and high-quality healthcare services. The government plans to strengthen this sector further, making it a key contributor to the country's tourism economy.
Places associated with the life and teachings of Lord Buddha will receive special focus under the tourism development plan. This move aligns with India's broader efforts to attract more international visitors.
Apart from tourism, the Finance Minister also announced financial support for the Western Kosi Canal project in Bihar's Mithilanchal region. The project is expected to benefit 50,000 hectares of agricultural land, improving irrigation facilities and boosting the rural economy.
