Every year, Thailand hosts two stunning lantern festivals - Yi Peng and Loy Krathong, which feel straight out of a fairytale.

Yi Peng is celebrated in northern Thailand, especially in Chiang Mai, on the full moon of the Lanna lunar calendar in November.

Thousands of people gather to release paper lanterns called khom loi into the sky and making new wishes by writing them on the lanterns.

Organised on the same night as Yi Peng, Loy Krathong involves floating decorated baskets (krathongs) on rivers and lakes.

Celebrated in late November, festivals mark the transition from monsoon to winter and coincide with the full moon of the Thai lunar calendar's 12th month.
