The Tamil Nadu assembly has passed the factories (amendment) Act 2023 that relaxes norms to permit 12-hour work schedule in industries amid opposition. The state government says the maximum weekly working hours will still be capped at 48 hours and workers will have the flexibility and option to avail three-day weekly paid leaves which it claims would benefit women besides attracting more industries to generate employment. However, even allies of the ruling DMK, including the left opposed this.
