In khap-ruled Haryana, the social fabric is governed by intricate laws that dictate who one can or cannot marry. Historically, villages were made up of a single clan which demands that young men and women from the village look upon each other as brother and sister. Those who break this rule are punished with murder. Modern India clamours for social change among the khaps but erasing ancient traditions is a deeply complex task.
