40 Years Later, Bhopal Gas Tragedy Still Haunts Madhya Pradesh

Forty years after the Bhopal gas tragedy, the nightmare is far from over. At least 350 tonnes of toxic waste from the Union Carbide factory is finally et to be disposed of at a treatment storage disposal Facility in Pithampur, Indore. However, previous tests at this facility have failed six times, and the resulting emission of highly toxic chemicals poses a significant cancer risk. This waste represents just 5 per cent of the total hazardous waste. Notably, 12 years ago, a German company offered to dispose of this waste for Rs 22 crore, but the then BJP government refused, leading to a current disposal cost of Rs 126 crore within the state itself. Anurag Dwary reports.
