Six earthquakes - the biggest of 7.7 magnitude - hit central Myanmar at 12.50pm (local time) Friday. The epicentres were northwest of the city of Sagaing, and at depths of 10 to 30km, the United States Geological Survey said. 16 deaths have been reported - in Myanmar so far - by local media, but global aid agencies fear the eventual toll in the secretive nation could run into hundreds, if not thousands.
