Scores of whales were found in a mass stranding on Sanday island in Scotland's Orkney archipelago, reported the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR). Of the 77 long-finned pilot whales discovered, only a dozen were still alive after being stranded for several hours. Mass strandings are common among tightly-knit pilot whale groups, but this incident is larger than usual. Last year, 55 pilot whales died in a similar event on the island of Lewis.
