Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers Chandrababu Naidu and MK Stalin respectively have expressed their concerns regarding the population of their states. Mr Naidu has talked about having incentives for larger families while Mr Stalin asked couples to have more children at a function. While government programs usually encourage people to have fewer babies, the chief ministers of the southern states fear that their effective implementation of family planning may backfire due to the pending delimitation of 2026. The delimitation is likely to give more seats to states with higher populations such as Bihar and UP while potentially taking away seats from southern states, likely weakening their political influence.
