Three days ago, two men were beaten to death in Assam on false rumours that they were child abductors. Police say that part of those rumours were spread on WhatsApp, making the Assam killings part of a deadly pattern of mob lynching based on fake news about child abductions. Since January this year, nine people have been beaten to death on similar grounds, from Telangana to Tamil Nadu to Karnataka - and now Assam.
