Last year, the fragility of the hills of Uttarakhand was witnessed by the entire nation as hundreds lost their lives in Kedarnath. As a journalist who covered the tragedy and saw first hand the unprecedented devastation of the hill state, still struggling to recover, it became important, almost urgent, to emphasise some of the issues that emerge from that tragedy, to understand just how fragile the hills are and how we need to understand this landscape. A unique group of people as part of their journey across the Himalayas trek 1150 km to learn the ancient hill knowledge and where old traditions are being replaced and disturbing the natural order of things. India Matters treks with this team of environmentalists, geologists, activists and enthusiasts.
