When the BJP came to power in Assam for the first time in 2016 - a milestone for the party in the northeast, they did so by promising the people of the state that they will protect their jaati or community, maati or land and bheti or base. With elections now just days away, the time has come to make promises anew and this time the ruling BJP has said its campaign theme is Suraksha, Samriddhi and Sanskriti - security, prosperity and the culture of the indigenous people. The Congress has also intensified its campaign with a "5G" or 5-Guarantee Yatra, reaching out to voters with five poll promises.
