The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has stayed the central government's restrictions on sale and purchase of cattle for slaughter for four weeks. The court also asked it to respond within that time on why its order should not be scrapped. The court was hearing a petition that said the government's new rule cattle rules violates basic rights. Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu, defending the notification was based on certain observations by the Supreme Court and a Parliamentary Panel's recommendations, said that complaints and issues raised against the notification will be studied. Will the government reconsider its slaughter ban?
