Bharat Ratna For Late OBC Leader Karpoori Thakur

Former Chief Minister of Bihar, popularly known as Jan Nayak, Karpoori Thakur has been awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously. Thakur was in office twice, once for a brief period of six months between 1970 and 1971 and then between 1977-79. The decision is politically significant as Karpoori thakur was a tall socialist leader who was born in Nai Samaj or the barber community, one of the most backward castes of Bihar.
