Speaking on the unrelenting protests across Kolkata, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged "conspiracy" by the Central government and some Left parties. "Some people taking advantage of turmoil in neighbouring country, they have forgotten that India, Bangladesh are separate nations," Ms Banerjee said. The Chief Minister said that Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal offered to resign from his position after protests, but the state government needed an officer who is well aware of the state's law and order situation ahead of Durga Puja festivities. The allegations that the government tried to buy the silence of the victim's family by bribing them are nothing but "slander", said Ms Banerjee. "I have never offered money to deceased doctor's family, this is nothing but "slander". I told deceased doctor's parents that if they wanted to do something in their daughter's memory, our govt with them. Conspiracy by Centre, some Left parties also involved", she said.
