The Bhitarkanika in Odisha are India's second largest Mangroves, after the Sundarbans. At one time, most of Odisha’s coast was covered with Mangroves, but unchecked development changed that and today only some patches are left. The Mangroves are Odisha's last line of defence against storms that can rise out of the ocean. Now, even though the Bhitarkanika is a protected area, it is facing new threats.
