Controversy erupted soon after Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today announced that the army will help build three over-bridges at Mumbai Elphinstone station. A month back, 23 people were killed in a stampede on a bridge at the same station. Many including opposition leaders like Omar Abdullah and Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh took to social media criticising the government for diverting defence resources for civilian work, some even asking will the army be filling potholes next. Tonight on Agenda, we ask is building bridges beneath the army? Is the SOS to the army for Elphinstone bridge too much? We speak exclusively to former Chief of Army Staff General Bikram Singh who says that the army should not be employed for the inadequacies of other agencies.
