The Rajya Sabha today saw the opposition tear into the government saying Aadhaar was never meant to pry into the private lives of citizens and that it would turn India into a surveillance state. The government argues that linking Aadhaar to welfare schemes has brought transparency and exposed four lakh bogus cases in midday meal scheme. The Supreme Court has reiterated that while Aadhaar can't be made mandatory for welfare schemes, the government can't be stopped from using Aadhaar for non-benefit schemes like income tax. On The Buck Stops Here, we debate, is Aadhaar set to become the indispensable identity no Indian can do without or will it mean a massive violation of privacy as so many have claimed?
