As the government and the law minister come under fire for allegedly watering down the CBI's report on the coal scam last month, government sources gave their defence on Wednesday but admitted officials pf the Prime Minister’s Office and law minister held consultations with the CBI, but that the law minister made only 'grammatical' changes to the report. The sources said the PM was not involved in the process at all and that the consultation was only on the process of coal allocation. It is a defence that is rather weak. NDTV had reported details of the law minister's meeting with the CBI director and top officials last month, where sources say the minister Ashwani Kumar made changes to the CBI's status report. We spoke to the former Solicitor General of India Harsh Salve, who said it was completely inappropriate to have had these meetings at all.
