Justice DY Chandrachud took oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India on Wednesday with a tenure of two years, the longest for any Chief Justice in over a decade. It comes at a time when the government has been making some strong statements about the appointment of judges. Just days earlier, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju came out against the collegium system. Mr Rijjju called the system "opaque" and "not accountable" and said the government would not remain silent forever. Is it time to make the appointment of judges more transparent?
