China's growth as a maritime power has a direct impact on the regional security balance in the Asia Pacific region. From illegally claiming territory and building islands in the South China seas to establishing its first overseas military base in Djibouti, Beijing is clearly out to increase its sphere of influence. The latest example of this is a new base in Cambodia being constructed by China. The base, still under construction, is not too far from the critical Malacca straits - the crucial waterway between East Asia and the rest of the Indian Ocean.
