Punjab on Thursday reported 3,187 fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day spike so far, and added 60 more fatalities. On March 26, the state had seen the maximum daily surge of 3,176 infections. And with spike in cases being caused by the deadly variant of Covid-19 found in the United Kingdom, the big worry is the "NRI belt" of Punjab consisting of Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and SBS Nagar districts, which account for 25 per cent of total cases and 27 per cent of state's deaths.
