The Uttar Pradesh government has acknowledged 2,000-plus Covid-linked deaths of its employees, including teachers during poll duty in the April panchayat elections. The government has also ordered compensation of Rs 30 lakh rupees each for the families of those who died. This is in sharp contrast to the government's stand just two months ago when it claimed less than 100 government employees had died during the rural polls in the state. Many are asking if the government's changed stance is because of the assembly polls due in UP in just a few months.
