More than 4 million pounds has been awarded to six projects that will help researchers explain and mitigate the disproportionate death rates from coronavirus among people from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds. The grants are from the UK Research and Innovation, and the National Institute for Health Research. Researchers say there will be rapid action based on the findings. Dr Manish Pareek, an associate clinical professor at the University of Leicester, who is leading one of the studies, and Dr Amit Gupta, Neonatal Consultant, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, who is also one of the investigators on the importance of the study, speak on how it could help countries around the world better understand the impact of the virus.
