Celebrations broke out at New York city's iconic Times Square area – popularly considered synonymous with the USA itself – after Democrat Joe Biden gained ground over President Donald Trump in the key state of Pennsylvania, putting him over the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes he needed to clinch the presidency. "Donald Trump was one of the worst things that happened to our country. He tried to steal our democracy. But, we showed the world, we showed Donald Trump over everyone else that democracy works," said a woman who was out with her family in masks. The revellers, who were seen wearing shields as well, also called vice-president-elect Kamala Harris's win a "historic moment". "Finally, something good happened in 2020… He won't go peacefully; we must come together," said a man holding a poster quoting Donald Trump's famed line "You are fired".
