Doctors in Kolkata took to the streets in large numbers today, forming a human chain to protest the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The tragic incident has sparked outrage not just in Kolkata but across the country, with doctors from various states joining in solidarity. The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday was granted permission to conduct a polygraph test of Sanjay Roy, the main accused in this case. CBI officers also, for the fourth consecutive day, questioned the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh in connection with their probe into the matter. Politics over this also intensified, with the BJP asking for the resignation of the Chief Minister, while the TMC has accused the BJP of politicising the matter. West Bengal governor has said that the State of Bengal is no longer safe for women.
