The verdict of the just-concluded assembly elections in J&K has thrown a spanner in the wheel for the region's already complex polity. The INDIA bloc comprising the National Conference, Congress, and CPIM bagged a majority, winning seats in the Kashmir valley, Pir Panjal, and Chenab regions, while the BJP swept the Dogra belt in Jammu. The new number arithmetic, however, could have significant implications for Jammu and Kashmir, with the two regions voting in polar opposite directions.
