Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar claimed in the Rajya Sabha last Friday that suicide deaths by farmers has dropped significantly to 152 in the current year as compared to 14,000 in 2011. Mr Pawar also said that the worst-affected states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have seen a fall in farmer suicides this year because of measures taken by the government. However, the reality seems a lot different, going by ground reports. NDTV travelled to Medak district just outside Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh to find five farmers had died the same week that Pawar made his claim.
