WhatsApp has reportedly rejected the Government of India's demand to track the origin of a message as part of the attempt to crack down on fake news. The messaging platform says building software to trace the origin of a message will undermine users' privacy and end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp has been battling massive criticism over the spread of fake news through its platform which has even led to incidents of mob-lynching in various parts of the country. It says it will educate users about misinformation but cannot compromise on privacy since users use the platform for all kinds of sensitive conversations.
