Fishermen In Chennai Condemn Demolition Of Houses Built Along Coast, Threaten Mass Protests
Fishermen in Chennai staged a protest on Sunday at Thiruvanmiyur Kuppam against the demolition of their houses by the Greater Chennai Corporation.The Corporation is demolishing constructions built less than 40 meters from the coastline, citing encroachment. However, the fishermen claimed that their houses had existed for decades and denied violating any laws. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is awaiting approval from the Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority to carry out a beach redevelopment project worth 100 crore rupees in the city.
