Assembly elections in Gujarat will be held in two phases on December 9 for 89 assembly seats and December 14 for 93 seats, the Election Commission said today. Votes for all 182 seats will be counted on December 18, along with those in Himachal Pradesh, where polling will be held on November 9. A model code of conduct, which prohibits announcements that can influence voters, comes into effect immediately. The Gujarat elections have been announced 13 days after the Election Commission declared poll dates for Himachal Pradesh, prompting opposition party Congress to accuse the Centre of pressuring the election body to allow the BJP more time to announce sops and launch big projects, a charge that both the Election Commission and the ruling party have rejected.
