Has the Govt diluted the Lokpal?
Today, the Cabinet cleared the Lokpal Bill, but with some major changes. It will now be brought to Parliament in this session. The changes are, however, different from what had been recommended by the Standing Committee of the Rajya Sabha where the bill is pending. The big changes that have been recommended by the Cabinet are: those accused of corruption will be given a chance to respond to charges before a decision is taken to clear sanction of prosecution. Also, the Lokpal can't transfer CBI officials investigating cases.
