In a significant order last week, the Supreme Court expanded the scope of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act to include "unmarried woman" and allowed a woman to abort her 24-weeks pregnancy arising out of a consensual relationship. Speaking to NDTV, Dr Janhavi Nilekani, Founder, Aastrika Midwifery Centre says that access to abortion will improve from this judgment. "It is similar to how they should have access to good healthcare regardless of their marital status. This order by the Supreme Court is significant as it includes unmarried woman as part of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act... this means unmarried woman will now have access to healthcare serves without having to take the legal route anymore," she says.
