A unique lab of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has been supporting the Indian armed forces and the local population of Ladakh by harnessing abundant solar energy. This initiative focuses on sustainable agriculture and developing heating solutions for the armed forces stationed at the Siachen Glacier, the world's highest battlefield. One significant achievement of this lab has been addressing hidden hunger.
The Defense Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) in Leh was established in 1962 to ensure the nutritional security of armed forces deployed in the 'L' sector. Since its inception, the institute has made R&D contributions to promote a greener and more self-sustainable Ladakh regarding fresh food production. Over the years, DIHAR has worked towards enhancing food, health, and energy security for troops stationed in this strategically important region.
