A lack of gender sensitivity in existing school textbooks has been flagged in in a gender audit report by the Delhi State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). The audit report also states that the language used in the texts, exercises, and activities is gender biased and depicts the dominating presence of males. The report also highlighted that no references concerning transgender people were identified in textbooks or manuals. Textbooks are central to the lives of children. They equalise education, and in many ways shape the way children look at the world, understand their rights and responsibilities, process the idea of equality and problem with entitlements. How important is it to have gender sensitive textbooks?
