Amid reports that the Maharashtra government is considering transferring Mumiba's top cop, Arun Patnaik, the city's police commissioner has defended his handling of the riot that erupted earlier this month at the city's Azad Maidan, where thousands had gathered to protest against the ethnic violence in Assam. Two people had died and more than 40 were injured. Mr Patnaik has been criticized for failing to act quickly to curb the riot. Speaking to NDTV, he said his duty was to show restraint and prevent the situation from getting worse. Asked about the policewomen who were assaulted by the mob, he said many media reports on the riots were either false or exaggerated.
