In 1913, Mahatma Gandhi led the Dandi march to protest against the salt tax. For him, salt was a symbol of swaraj and a weapon that dissolved socio-economic divides. In modern India, the salt struggle continues, but in not in the way Gandhiji wanted. In Gujarat, salt workers earn almost nothing. Across India, Dalits cannot afford to buy and eat salt.
